Dental Implants Overview
A dental implant is a screw-like titanium post that we surgically place in your jawbone to replace the roots of a missing tooth, providing a permanent base for replacement teeth. The procedure to place an implant is minor, usually requiring only local anesthesia.
After a healing period, we will screw a connector called an abutment into your implant, and top it with a lifelike tooth called a crown that we custom-make to match your natural teeth. Implants have a more than 95% success rate, which is significantly higher than any other tooth replacement procedure.
What are the advantages of dental implants?
- High success rate - 97% for 10 years
- Decreased risk of decay with adjacent teeth
- Decreased risk of endodontic problems with adjacent teeth
- Improved ability to clean the proximal surfaces of the adjacent teeth
- Improved aesthetics of adjacent teeth
- Improved maintenance of bone in the edentulous site
- Decreased cold or contact sensitivity with adjacent teeth
- Psychological advantages
- Decreased abutment tooth loss
Are you a candidate for dental implants?
Dental implants offer an excellent option for patients who are missing one or more teeth, or those missing a full upper or lower set of teeth. Most people in good overall and oral health, along with adequate bone mass to support an implant are good candidates. If, however, you have suffered bone loss, that does not necessarily rule you out as a candidate. Bone grafting can rebuild your bone mass, allowing you to restore missing teeth using dental implants.
Bone regeneration using barrier membranes
This technique helps give bone cells an advantage over other types of cells, allowing them to multiply and fill an area where bone loss has occurred. In this procedure, we place a barrier membrane covering the areas of bone loss, and blocking access for other types of cells, which enables bone cells to regenerate. Resorbable barriers may disintegrate over time, while non-resorbable barriers may need removal during a separate procedure.
Single implants
If you are missing one tooth, we insert a single implant in your jawbone to replace the roots of that tooth. The next step is placing a crown to simulate an actual tooth. This type of restoration has the highest success rate, making it an excellent long-term solution for replacing missing teeth. An implant will restore the function of a missing tooth, leaving you with a natural looking and feeling restoration.
Overdentures
Overdentures, otherwise known as implant supported dentures, are restorations designed to replace an arch of missing teeth. They usually require the use of four to six implant posts for adequate support to secure your dental restorations. Overdentures are a good option for patients with existing bone loss, as the final dentures have flanges present for lip and facial support.
All-On-4® Implants
All-on-4® candidates require the presence of more bone than overdentures. The final prosthesis is screw-retained and can only be removed by a dental professional. These require four to eight implants per arch and the final restorations do not possess flanges for lip or facial support, hence the need for more bone mass.
Caring for your implants
Implants can last a lifetime with proper care and maintenance. That involves regular brushing and flossing, along with professional cleanings. Excessive grinding of your teeth can damage your implants, so a mouthguard may be recommended to protect them. Caring for your restorations will help ensure that you enjoy a healthy smile for a lifetime!
