Dental Sedation Options

At My time Dental Centers, you can relax while you get the dental care you need.  It begins with receiving the time needed to fully understand your dental conditions, treatment options, and having all your questions answered.  We want you to feel at ease.  Small touches such as pillows, blankets, headphones, Netflix on TV, and having lavender essential oil being diffused, help make dental visits more pleasant.

For patients who suffer with dental anxiety or phobia or those having more extensive procedures, considering sedation can be a game changer.  Patients with cardiac concerns are often advised by their cardiologist to be sedated during complex dental treatment.  A strong gag reflex is easily managed via sedation.  There are different levels of sedation for every need.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous Oxide is a safe and effective sedative.  Sometimes referred to as “laughing gas”, nitrous oxide is inhaled through a small mask that fits over your nose. Nitrous Oxide does not put you to sleep so you will be able to hear and respond to directions from the dentist.

The fast acting and calming sensation along with the immediate recovery once the mask is removed, makes Nitrous Oxide a convenient option.  You can drive yourself to and from your dental appointment since there is no residual affect.

Oral Conscious Sedation

Oral Conscious Sedation is the next level of dental sedation.  Typically, the dentist will give you a prescription to take prior to your procedure.  When you arrive at the office, you will be given another combination of medications to further relax you.

Oral Conscious sedation does not cause sleep.  You will be able to answer questions and follow directions.  Because of the amnesiac properties you will have very little if any recollection of your appointment.  You will need a companion drive to drive you to and from your appointment.

Moderate IV Sedation

Moderate IV Sedation is perfect for patients with a severe gag reflex.  Some patients prefer to have as much treatment completed in one visit as possible.  Moderate IV Sedation provides a relaxation of the muscles that enable longer appointments.

If less appointments work best for your busy schedule, ask if an “all in one” dental appointment would work for you.  You will have to have a companion driver bring you to your appointment and take you home.

General Anesthesia

General Anesthesia is the deepest form of sedation.  You will be completely unconscious.  During the entire procedure you will be monitored by a Nurse Anesthetist to assure your vital signs are exactly where they should be.

With this option you will need to fast, have a companion drive bring you to your appointment, return you home as well as remain with you until the anesthesia has completely worn off.
